Chevrolet VoltCost: Est. $38,000
Tax credit: $7,500
The Volt is expected to go on sale in late 2010. It can go up to 40 miles on plug-in power alone. Beyond that, a small gasoline engine will generate electricity on the run so drivers can go farther without stopping to recharge.
General Motors targeted a 40-mile range because that's farther than most Americans travel on most days. That means many drivers could go weeks using very little, if any, gasoline.

Instead of trying to increase the range, engineers will concentrate on reducing the cost of future versions of the Volt, GM executives have said.

Kinjo Note: I want one of these. I just wonder why they are not using solar in anyway. Watch, they are going to have a huge vast product line of solar power charging attachments you have to buy additionally.

they don't put solar panels on cars because solar panels break easily. if small rocks are flying at your car and hit the panel on the top it may break. AND we all know cars get dust on them. dirt severly weakens the amount of electricity it gets.

underneath the glass or protective coverings over the shell

easy fixes with enough ingenuity

But we use oil to make plastic...

Anyways, if people weren't so lazy, we could just wash the solar panels. Lolol.

well in 9th grade at arlington we had a day devoted to testing solar pannles and even the slightest extra glass coverup decreased power take in by like 40% and anything close to a windshield or panle cover like for our headlights decreased it 60-80% overall solor power needs Direct Heat light with no variations from UV rays its not just the light you need its what comes directly from the sun that can also give us Canser that fules the power from solar energy... Myself i think Hawaii and austraila have been under utilized.. but then again smarter people are in the works of making solar power satalites to grab more UV radiation power from the light in space and be closer to the sun then any place on our earth. doing that even solves the weather problems of Needing dirct angled Light.

you guys dont know about the advancements in solar, the technology that is availble to the public is the old solar technology from the 70s/80s

there have been many advancements, but just not marketed

the technology we have now for solar on the market only takes in 1 color ray from the sun, but they have advancments in solar that takes all the ray colors from the sun and turns them into energy

the main concern is filling up a battery, batterys need to be advanced too, to hold more power

a few breakthroughs ignored by the public;

http://www.technologyreview.com/energy/21155/

http://www.greentechgazette.com/index.php/solar-energy/solar-panel-breakthrough-captures-96-21-percent-of-light/

when i move to florida, solar power is something im going to explore more

Electric cars sounds great, but that means our action movies can't have the hero driving his car into the river to save the damsel and kill the bad guy anymore.

well no news programs really get into modern solar power stuff, its "too technical" they say. they'd rather complain about gas.

i liked the first one. but neather of them will work if you cover it with glass or a type of protective plastic. the second one MAY help and bring it back to normal efficiency. but that may work at ALL it may instead of bringing it down 40% it will bring it down 80%. you won't know unless they do a test on it.

No, it would work, but as time wore on and the cars (Which we all know go through some rough weather) went places, it would get less and less efficient due to use. For the first week it would be great. ;D

The only other alternative I can think of is using this stuff that my dad uses on the car every now and again, when we go on long road-trips to protect the windshields. We could use that on the solar panels. Hydrophobic glass polish, or something like that.

Other than that, it would just require some simple, extra maintenance to keep it clean. Personally, if I don't have to use gas, or I have to clean my car more instead of going to the gas station, I'm cool with it. Haha.

Perhaps even make it that much simpler and allow them to be removable to clean.

My only concern then is after a crash or accident. You'd have to spend thousands to get new solar panels. Doesn't sound appealing.

This also means that our action heroes can't shoot at the car's gas tank and blow it up now. This sucks.
