What bond is stronger, Ionic or Covalent?

If you took Chemistry, you should know!

PS. I put trick in question, hehe. >=|

This question is invalid, as ionic bonds do not exist in physical reality. An ionic bond (defined as two or more ionic elements attracted by opposite polarization of said ions) would require near-infinite electronegative difference. Thus, all ionic bonds have at least some covalent instance. An example in my textbook gives the common salt Sodium Chloride (Na-Cl) as having a NEARLY pure ionic bonding, whereas Silicon Dioxide is generalized as an ionic bond but has nearly 50% covalency.
Tl;dr ionic is stronger.

You caught the trick! Good jobbbb.
Title: Re: Ask Dr.Know
Post by: Kedzor on August 20, 2009, 12:13:36 AM
I should add, ionic is stronger because is has the maximum geometric packing potential, kind of like a jigsaw whereas covalent bond is more like static cling.
also, what trick?
Title: Re: Ask Dr.Know
Post by: Red on August 20, 2009, 12:17:22 AM
Generally, you can't actually say one is absolutely stronger than the other. It depends on what atoms are used to make the bond. But yes, I guess USUALLY ionic is stronger.

Why do people hang from hooks in their backs for spiritual bliss?
Title: Re: Ask Dr.Know

The act known as a Suspension is the ultimate piercings.  the extreme pain caused by  [cen] ING MEATHOOKS TROUGH YOUR SKIN causes such an extreme pain that your pituitary gland floods your brain with endorphins, or feel good brain juice. Some mistake this thoroughly chemical process as a 'spiritual bliss'.

How is solar power made?
Do you mean solar energy as in energy from the sun, or the electrical energy derived by one of any means by artificial or natural devices?
Whatever, I'll answer them all.
The sun is about 75% hydrogen(H) and 25% helium (He) which is the most common element in the universe consisting of a single proton(+) and one electron(-). This structure makes it highly reactive in that it is quite easy to share valence with other atoms. Under the right conditions, this atom is 'split' and produces massive amounts of energy and radiation. The sun is just such a conditioner, what with the mass (1.989x10^30Kg, approximate) and volume(1.44122x10^18 cubic kilometers). This produces a massive sustained thermonuclear reaction, dumping incredible amounts of radiation into the local solar system. In fact, all the elements (except hydrogen) are forged at the center of such a reaction. There isn't an atom in your body that wasn't made in the heart of some distant long-dead star!
Now bear with me. I told you that to tell you this. The amount of  raw energy that the sun deposits on earth is about 1,368 watts per meter squared.(this is called the solar constant.) Keep in mind, that's on the very outer edge of the atmosphere. Much of it is in the ultraviolet spectrum and is filtered out by the ozone(O2).
There will be a test on this later, i hope you're taking notes.
Plants use this radiation to make energy for themselves by photosynthesis- they use the energy to decay organic carbon compounds into glucose.
Now how about the artificial means of using this energy? One of several ways. I'll talk about the two most common.
A Solar furnace can be used to boil a shitload of water and force the steam trough a generator, making electricity. Or you can make shit complicated by using a photovoltaic cell.
There are many different kinds of photovoltaic cell- Selenium base, noncrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, and some sort of amorphous thing that i don't even-
I'm getting ahead of myself. Basically it takes a lot, i mean a LOT, of these cells to create any sort of meaningful power. The sunlight created a chemical reaction in the cells and the energy is converted into electricity.
I gotta go now, if there's anything i missed just ask.

That's failing at quotes ( should double check next time you post something), and just plain avoiding the question. this is a hypothetical question, THERE IS NO PINOCCHIO, what does it matter if it's a picture?

lets just say there is such a thing as Pinocchio, lets say he said his nose will grow, what would happen?

After you answer his question you can answer mine =3
I'm more into the world of medicine so that is what my questions will consist of.

A fifteen year old boy is in school, his mouth feels dry and he is incredibly thirsty. He stops at a water fountain and drinks and drinks, but his thirst is unquenchable. He has had this problem for a while now, but thought nothing of it, and when he eats, after eating he feel more hunger than before he ate. Even so, he seems to be losing a lot of weight and is constantly tired. As he turns away from the water fountain, his vision blurs, and his headache, that had previously been but a dull pain, intensifies. That is the last the boy remembers before losing consciousness.

Family background: his grandfather died of a heart attack; previous to dying, his own medical conditions caused him to lose both legs, and be placed in a wheelchair for life.

Based off these symptoms, how would you diagnose him? Be as specific as possible =3

Lol, you are bad at being snide. the quotes did exactly what i wanted them too. See, what i did with those quotes was i used them to point out the fact that there is no picture in your post where you say there is. Also, you clearly don't understand the concept of what science is. This is a philosophical issue. Also, why would i answer your question if you're being a flower power?

There are several possibilities. I would guess he has some sort of parasitic infection like a tapeworm that doesn't allow his intestinal tract to absorb the nutrients from the food.
Failing that, he may have a severe zinc and omega-fatty acid deficiency in his brain wich can muck about with the ability to digest, as well as a horomine imbalace that causes the hormone Leptin to either not metabolise or fail to sythesise entirely.

Now what could cause that is some sort of pituritary malfuction. I'm not too certain of thedetails, becase medicine is nowhere near my feild of study. I'm not house. Sometimes people lose their legs to diabeetus, witch can be hereditary. Something tells me you would know the awnser to this question better than i. Please enlighten me.

The answer is type 2 diabetes due to the boy's high blood pressure. His grandfather did lose his legs to diabetes, that was the only correct part of all that you said; high blood pressure runs in the family, which is why I stated the heart attack (being a common cause of heart attacks is high blood pressure). The first thing any good doctor does when the symptom "unquenchable thirst" is check for diabetes, especially when there is heart disease in the family. The answer would have been plain as day to any medical student given that specific scenario ^^ Good try though! Good try! But once you saw the eating but still hungry after eating symptom you completely disregarded all others.

No, he probably couldn't.

Next scenario!

On the edge of a small rural town, lives a small Jewish family, with a small farm running off septic, there are no unhealthy member in the family, nor any farm animals show signs of being unwell. Yet still, the youngest child of this family seems to be experiencing stomach problems. The family history for medical conditions is relatively clean, with the exception of mild lactose intolerance and acid reflux.

The boy vomits often, the color from his skin paling, and he finds it hard to even wake in the morning. He has grown increasingly weaker, with each passing day, and never has any desire to eat, unless forced upon him by his family. At night he if often found crying and struggling to fall asleep, claiming his stomach hurts. He loses a lot of weight on a daily basis, most likely due to his lack of appetite, and he has been experiencing diarrhea and fever. The family really started to worry when a lump beneath the skin emerged.

How do you diagnose him?

o.o Umm... the diagnosis was a twist off your previous diagnosis. What was wrong with the child was that he had gotten a tape worm from a swine; being he is Jewish, he would not have eaten pork, and so he came in contact with the disease from runoff water when it rained mixed with an infected swine's droppings, that leaked into the septic and into his drinking water. He injected eggs, that later hatched and spread throughout his system. Tapeworms can often not show any symptoms at all, so the infected swine went undetected, until the young boy with a weak immune system was showing signs of infection. The lump later formed, as larvae traveled to other parts of his body, which resulted in cysts; creating a bulge, easy to mistake as a tumor. The rest of the symptoms he experienced can all be explained through this diagnosis. =3

Slippery little bastard!
Hey, do ya think the tapeworm wears a little yamika?
Would a cristan tapeworm have a tiny cross?

If it conserved EXACTLY 50% of energy each time, it wouldn't.  But that is only possible on paper. Also, it would eventually reach the Planck Length, which is kind of the smallest distance between two separate  objects possible.

A man and his two sons are on one side of a river. There is a boat. The man weighs 200 lbs. The sons each weigh 100 lbs. The boat can only carry 200 lbs at once. None of them can swim. How do all three cross the river safely?

They get a bigger boat.

Jk, the two sons go across, and son one stays behind. The other takes the boat back to the fat ass dad, who takes it across by himself. Thes, he stays on the shore alone as the son one goes back and picks up his brother, they both cross together. Easy.

I'm not shy, I'm just completely and entirely uninterested in the topic, unless the drugs have to do with medicinal purposes, in which case, I already have plenty of knowledge about quite a few of them, or I can study them further and learn more about them. But a lot of drug userse like to argue "they are being used for "medicinal purposes" to which I reply, "stfu" and walk away =3

Uhm... that actually sounds really mean o.o I don't mean it like that, I just have a thing against drug abusers... well not really against them just against what they are doing.. really drugs in general, even over-the-counter pills scare me o.o

It wouldn't be worth it. I could quote to you all the same science stuff, all the same studies and clinical trials, but you've already dismissed my argument so I'm not going to waste my time or yours. All I'm going to say is you are going to learn a lot more in collage than you bargained for. You're right, they ARE jump at chance to justify their habits, but this lumps the junkies in with the casual and nonabusive users. Good day ma'am.

I don't mean to lump you in with junkies, hell, my parents do drugs casually. Defend your habit all you want, no one else has been able to convince me, but you claim your up to challenges, so shoot! I'm a pretty rational person.

Well, basically, i don't drink alcohol to inebriation. I keep my shit together, and cannabis never takes priority over my main goal in life or the things that are important to me. I do a lot of research on the things i put into my body, and as far as i can figure cannabis isn't bad for you at all in reasonable doses. It isn't a 'gateway drug', it isn't addictive, and it honestly helps me solve some personal shit. I'm not telling you you should, because that is your decision and i respect it. I'm just saying it isn't all bad.

Also, I'm horribly dysgraphic too. I'm so ashamed of my handwriting that I'm embarrassed to turn in the first written assignment to my professors. It dosen't help that my mother is dyslexic.

Fair enough. I would say every kind of drug, regardless of if its prescribed, used in moderation, over the counter, or an illegal substance, has negative effects on your body; in fact I'm convinced of that. However, this specific drug I prefer over tobacco and alcohol use; less addictive, less destructive. However, every foreign body going into your system effects the liver; the body's filtration unit. Drugs specifically cause liver damage, doesn't matter what drug it is. Other than that, anything burnt and inhaled causes lung damage, and this drug also can cause cardiac damage. The fact that is effects heart rate is proof enough of that; and when mixed with alcohol its even worse; one fastens heart rate while the other slows it down, so the user isn't aware the are as high or drunk as the really are; though this also occurs when mixing alcohol with caffeine.

In all honesty, I'd prefer a pot user over an alcoholic, though I disagree with recreational use of either. Alcohol I have a huge vendetta against, though casual drinking isn't a terrible thing either. I only have a problem with alcohol because my mom is an alcoholic and I hate having to live with it. Besides that I disagree with such choices, but I won't say that they are entirely terrible.

lol I already proved to nick weed is a gateway drug. Its non-scientific so he doesn't get it. At a different level, any irresponsible action relating to any food/chemical stuff  induced to a body at any given time can be deemed as abuse.
The general hypothesis of life and daily actions deems whether things are good or bad,  opposite of evidence based conclusions. Everything is based upon the general populace and those who shape the fragile framework of your existence.

I don't say I will join you in your fight, but I'll keep an open opinion.
