HARD IMPACT 2: SECOND DRAFT
« on: July 03, 2009, 10:38:28 AM »
Here's the second draft of Hard Impact, now titled Hardened. I worked a much better storyline as well as a different, better ending.

HARDENED (hard impact 2)
a script by Andy Zielinski - 6/30/09

EXT. NEW ST. STAKEOUT - NIGHT (day 1)

We roll in from the sky to officers Charlie Hatcher and Nick Buchinsky sit inside a car parallel-parked, sipping coffee at a little stakeout.

BUCHINSKY
Some coffee, Hatch.

HATCHER
You wanted Dunkin Donuts, you got it. Just don't expect me to pay for your bagel again.

BUCHINSKY
Well your wife's coffee is better anyway.

HATCHER
She's my fiancee, not my wife. And she uses that Maxwell House crap. I have to make an excuse to not drink it now.

BUCHINSKY
What's the latest one?

HATCHER
I told her this morning that a guy jumped off a building and I had to help pry him off the asphalt.

BUCHINSKY
Ooo, that's interesting. You're ready to marry this woman and your still lying to her every day?

HATCHER
I don't hear clean stories coming from your mouth either, Flash.

BUCHINSKY
I'm not the one getting married.

HATCHER
Alright, just keep your eyes on the Honda.

BUCHINSKY
Didn't she used to date some mob boss?

HATCHER
I said eyes on the Honda. ...yeah, she did. The guy's name was Don Lewsten, he's an organized scumbag. The guy has more accomplices than OJ has accusations.

BUCHINSKY
Helluva world, ain't it... (sips coffee) so what's so special about this Honda, anyway?

HATCHER
It's registered to flower power Schifrin, an old money counterfeiter who has ties to Lewsten and is apparently still getting his feet in the duck pond.

BUCHINSKY
We're gonna arrest him?

HATCHER
If he ever comes out.

Silence rests.

BUCHINSKY
Do you still wear that $200 leather jacket your ex-wife gave you?

HATCHER
Still wearing it and no, you can't have it.

BUCHINSKY
Oh. So how's Farina been since the knee-capping incident?

HATCHER
He's still lying on his couch watching CSI--making the most of his month of recovery.

BUCHINSKY
He didn't share the paperwork on that Fallne case, did he?

HATCHER
Nope, and don't bring that case up.

BUCHINSKY
Why not bring it up?

HATCHER
You really want me to reiterate this? Godssake, I told you once this week. Fallne had the hostage killed and I shot his whole pack of goons. End of story.

They see Schifrin go outside of his house and walk to his car.

BUCHINSKY
There's our boy.

HATCHER
Your show, Ace.

BUCHINSKY
We jump out on 2.

HATCHER
2? Why not 3?

BUCHINSKY
Does it really matter?

HATCHER
Yes, it does. (he looks back at Schifrin) Crap, he's getting in. Let's rock 'n roll.

Hatcher and Buchinsky get out the car and approach Schifrin

HATCHER (to Schifrin)
Sir, I'm Sgt. Hatcher--we're with the Spring City police department. I'm gonna have to ask you to put your hands behind your head and-..

Schifrin pulls out a gun and opens fire on the cops, who take cover behind a small wall.

HATCHER (to Buchinsky)
Quick little bastidge, ain't he?

Hatcher pops out to the side and opens fire on the crook, who takes off in the opposite direction.

HATCHER
Shoot, he's on the move!

They both get up and try to run after the man, who runs right into the darkness. They both stop, aggrevated dearly. Hatcher takes out his frustration on the sidewalk.

FADE TO BLACK.

FADE FROM BLACK: INT. LEWSTEN'S PLACE - DAY (day 2)

We follow Schifrin from behind as he walks through Lewsten's house. He enters the man's kitchen, where he sits drinking and reading the newspaper.

SCHIFRIN
Don, I got a bit of a problem.

LEWSTEN
What's it this time, flower power?

SCHIFRIN
These two local cops know who I am.

LEWSTEN
I think everybody knows who you are, flower power--you broadcast your business like it's Oxiclean.

SCHIFRIN
He says his name's Sgt. Hatcher. I asked my buddy downtown about him--he says that cop's harder than a slab of plywood. He could burn my whole business down!

LEWSTEN
Hatcher? Charlie Hatcher? sonuvabit....my ex-wife is seeing him.

SCHIFRIN
Well what do you want me to do, rub him out?

LEWSTEN
No, just send a couple of lads over there. I have plans of my own.

CUT TO: INT. HATCHER'S HOUSE - Day (day 2)

Hatcher lies down on his bed in the early morning, sunlight shining thru the curtain.
We cut to a window where Hitman #1 comes in stealthly with a silenced Mac10. He creeps towards Hatcher's room and kicks open the door, opening fire on his bed--but the bed is empty! He takes his finger off the trigger.
Hatcher pops up from the other side of the bed and pops Hitman #1 four times.
Hitman #2 comes in a side window; Hatcher caps him in the chest.
Hatch runs across the bed and grabs the Mac10. He come out the door and lights up Hitman #3 on his right and Hitman #4 on his left.
Hitman #5 comes out of a far doorway and fires off, but Hatcher keeps cover with his pistol and runs down the stairs.
He reaches the bottom and turns back, seeing Hitman #5. He nails him and continues running for the exit of his house.
Hatcher bursts out the back door and sees Hitman #6 in the distance and keeps running towards a wooded area while he's fired at; dirt kicks up behind him. He jumps in the woods and keeps moving until he gets stopped dead in his tracks by Don Lewsten, who has a revolver aimed at him.

LEWSTEN
Hey Hatch.

Don shoots Hatcher square in the chest. Hatcher falls down and Lewsten looks at him casually.

LEWSTEN (cont'd)
Don't bother getting up. I have a feeling your darling Rene` will be seeking my arms soon enough when she hears you're dead. Have a nice life....what's left of it.

Lewsten walks away, leaving Hatcher to die. We pan to Hatcher, lying on the ground in incredible pain. He rests for a moment and coughs some blood, then nimbly gets up and wanders off.

CUT TO: INT. BUCHINSKY'S HOUSE - DAY (day 2)

Buchinsky is in his kitchen, drinking orange juice. He hears a banging on the door. Nick gets up and opens the door--a bloody Hatcher falls in, coughing and wheezing.

BUCHINSKY
My god, Hatch! Who did this to you?

HATCHER
Lewsten, it's Don Lewsten. Bandage me up, will ya.

We fade to white in slow motion as Buchinsky struggles with Sgt. Hatcher.

FADE FROM WHITE

Rene` sits in Hatcher's other bedroom and answers her ringing cellphone.

LEWSTEN (phone)
Hey, Rene--it's Donnie.

RENE`
Donnie? Why the hell are you calling this number?

LEWSTEN
I was just watching the news. You're fiancee's been shot and killed.

RENE`
Wh-what? Charlie's been shot?

LEWSTEN
Yeah, the news said he was found shot in the chest today in the woods at noon.

RENE`
oh, oh my god! I can't believe this....I don't know what to do!

LEWSTEN
You can come over to my place if it'll make you feel better.

Rene` hangs up the phone and leaves.

CUT TO: INT. DON LEWSTEN'S HOUSE - DAY (day 2)

Lewsten answers his door, seeing Rene` there. She goes into his arms.

FADE TO BLACK

FADE FROM BLACK: INT. BUCHINSKY'S HOUSE - DAY (day 2)

Hatcher lies down asleep on Buchinsky's couch. He slowly awakens and sees Nick sitting in front of him.

BUCHINSKY
How ya doin', partner?

HATCHER
I feel like hell. Did you get the bullet out?

BUCHINSKY
Yep, it took forever since you wouldn't stop squirming. Any idea why Lewsten wanted to kill you?

HATCHER
He said he's after my fiancee. With me dead, he thinks she'll run back into his arms not knowing what to do.

BUCHINSKY
So what, should we put an APB out for him?

HATCHER
No....I'll take care of Lewsten.

BUCHINSKY
Hey, I'm not gonna let you go vigilante, partner. You'll get thrown in jail with all the other guys you locked up.

HATCHER
This is my business and there's no other way to end it. Lewsten's a mad dog and I'm taking him to the pound.

SMASH CUT TO: INT. LEWSTEN'S HOME - DAY (day 2)

Don Lewsten is on his telephone, talking (to Rene`).

LEWSTEN
It's alright, Rene`. Call if you need anything else; I'll be here. Bye.

Don ends the call and turns to an accomplice wearing sunglasses--this man is better known as The Specialist.

LEWSTEN (to Specialist)
Well, it looks like Hatcher is out of the picture and his fiancee is back in my arms. I have a new order of business for you.

Lewsten pulls out a picture of Nick Buchinsky and hands it to The Specialist.

LEWSTEN (cont'd)
His name is Nick Buchinsky. He's a small-time cop who used to be Charlie Hatcher's partner until the late unpleasantness. I'm leaving it up to you and your accomplice to rub him out, but do it quickly. The Italians are getting impatient with the way I run my business--I want you to take him out tout suite.

The Specialist leaves and Lewsten resumes to his business.

CUT TO: EXT. MARVIN ST. - DAY (day 3)

Hatcher and Buchinsky walk away from the town post office together and up the street.

BUCHINSKY
Charlie, I'm not let you gonna kill this guy. You murder Lewsten and you're just as bad as him!

HATCHER
You're not gonna stop me from killing Lewsten. This is something I have to do.

BUCHINSKY
No, you don't HAVE to do anything! Let the justice system land this guy!

HATCHER
You and I both know that if he ever gets arrested, his scumbag pals are gonna pay his bail the minute that judge bangs the gavel. There's no other justice but what I make.

BUCHINSKY
This isn't justice, this is taking the law into your own hands!

HATCHER
Just stay out of this, Nick, this is something I have to do and you sure as hell aren't going to stop me.

Hatcher and Buchinsky go up to the front of Buchinsky's house.

HATCHER
I'm gonna have a smoke out back.

We follow Hatcher and Buchinsky to the back porch of Buchinsky's house. Hatcher pulls out a cigarette and places it in his mouth, then looks up to a distracting noise.
On the other side of the yard, a car pulls up and the driver gets out--no other than The Specialist. Hatcher is, of course, bewildered yet unsure.
Suddenly, the Specialist goes to the trunk and pulls out an AR-15, then instantly opens single-shot fire. Both cops bolt inside as the gunfire hails on them and the house.
The Specialist empties the gun and drops it back in the trunk, then walks towards the house with a knife.

INT. BUCHINSKY'S HOUSE - DAY (day 1)

Specialist goes in dilligently and gets chopped in the throat by Hatcher. A big tussle ensues and both men struggle to kill each other. Buchinsky hits Specialist over the head, but Specialist knocks him back onto the ground. Hatcher then pulls a series of quick, hard moves and puts him in a headlock. They bustle around for a bit as the Specialist gasps for air. Hatcher brings him to the ground and eventually cuts out all of his air, killing The Specialist. Hatcher slides back, leaning his back against a post. He pushes The Specialist's corpse away with his foot. Buchinsky walks in.

BUCHINSKY
Jesus.

HATCHER
10 to 1 says Lewsten sent this bastard to kill you.

BUCHINSKY
Why would he want to kill me?

HATCHER
I'm sure the way Donnie boy figures it, his little empire needs its foundation first. What better way than to knock off a couple of police officers, eh? Don thinks I'm dead and now my fiancee crawls back into his arms, not knowing what to do. I say we lay low now that he thinks we're both corpses and sort this whole thing out. Then we get Rene` back. Now help me get rid of this body.

Both cops get up and grab the corpse.

FADE TO BLACK

FADE FROM BLACK: INT. LEWSTEN'S HOUSE - DAY (day 3)

A man in simple clothes walks into Lewsten's kitchen and disrupts his evening of sipping orange juice.

LEWSTEN
*sighs* what is it now, flower power?

SHIFRIN
I haven't gotten any word from The Specialist yet on Buchinsky. I'm kinda worried.

LEWSTEN
Ugh, things never work out the way we hope, do they? I spring from prison and get thrown into this mess. I send a top hitman to rub out a small P.I. and now the guy may as well be dead. So now what, flower power? Do we assume that Buchinsky is alive and set up a meeting? Do we see for ourselves if the job is done? Tell me, flower power.

SCHIFRIN
Why don't we just set up a meeting with Buchinsky? We hold Hatcher's ex-fiancee hostage and call Buchinsky out to the woods. We can hold her for ransom and just kill Buchinsky anway.

LEWSTEN
More for us....sounds good.

CUT TO: INT. BUCHINSKY'S HOUSE - DAY (day 3)

Nick Buchinsky sits in his house, talking with Hatcher about the plan, when he hears some rumpling outside. He goes out to check the mailbox.

EXT. BUCHINSKY'S HOUSE - DAY (day 3)

Buchinsky and Hatcher go outside to the mailbox and pull out a note that reads 'BUCHINSKY, MEET AT THE FOREST BY MCCOY DRIVE. $8 MILLION IN EXCHANGE FOR HATCHER'S OLD LADY. 4 PM TOMORROW -LEWSTEN.'

Hatcher looks up at Buchinsky, very serious.

HATCHER
Tomorrow. That'll be the day.

BUCHINSKY
Don't do it, Hatch. It's me he wants.

Both cops walk inside to the kitchen. Hatcher pulls out Nick's Beretta. We center a closeup of him pulling back the slide of the pistol.

HATCHER
Lewsten made things personal for me--I'm gonna see to it that he won't be able to breathe again after tomorrow.

FADE TO BLACK

FADE FROM BLACK: EXT. THE FOREST - DAY (day 3)

Lewsten and flower power walk into the forest, Lewsten holding Rene` hostage. Both cons look around for Buchinsky.

RENE`
Donnie, what the hell is going on?

LEWSTEN
It's judgement day and I'm holding the gavel, baby. Isn't that right, Tom?

SCHIFRIN
If Buchinsky ever shows up....it's 4:03.

LEWSTEN
Come on out, Buchinsky! We want the ransom!

Hatcher moves through the wooded area with the pistol out, covering all angles. He looks consistently through the woods for Don.

LEWSTEN (o.s.)
We have the girl, Buchinsky! Bring us the money and she won't get hurt! We had a deal!

Hatcher advances to the area of Lewsten and Schifrin and sees them in the distance. His gun is steady and his attention is focused solely on getting his fiancee back.

LEWSTEN
Come on, buddy! We had a deal!

Two loud shots go off and flower power drops to the ground. Lewsten looks up and sees Hatcher with his Beretta raised.

LEWSTEN
Hatcher!

Hatch quickly shoots Lewsten; the man drops like a hammer. Rene` runs free to Hatcher and they hug each other.

RENE`
I thought you were dead...

Hatcher looks at her and shakes his head. She hugs him again.
Without warning, the body of Lewsten slowly rises to its feet. Don's not dead and he still has his gun--the man raises it up in an attempt to murder Hatcher again.
Hatch looks up and sees Lewsten standing with his firearm raising. Hatcher holds Rene` out to the side and lifts the Beretta. Hatcher fires off the last 8 rounds of the magazine into Lewsten. Don's body drops to the earth for the last time. Hatch waits a moment and lowers his empty pistol.
We sit on a distant shot of the three people in the field and freeze frame.

FADE TO BLACK. ROLL CREDITS.

I actually liked the other ending better, because it was the type that left you hanging a little, like kept you wondering, made you think more into it.

This one isn't bad, the extra character and the add to deceit and impure intentions can only improve the story! ^_^ G'job buddy!

I am the creator of awesome points and therefore I have a never ending supply.

We just finished filming the seige on the house involving Hatcher killing 5 or 6 professionals. Very rough, solid business.
