Well look at it this way.

Vegita only turned super saiyan because he was so angry that he wasn't better than Goku.

yeah, but look at Goku and Gohan!! they both are pure hearted and reached super saiyan because it was a need not a desire to them. Thats why it took Vegeta so long to go supper saiyan, but when he did, he didnt care about anything anymore. With that, he transformed.

What about Goten? He just randomly was a super saiyan.

I believe it is a significant emotional storm that causes super saiyan transformation, as long as other requirements are met (such as a minimal power level). If I remember correctly, Goku turned Super Saiyan out of rage of Freiza killing Krillin and Piccolo. not because he "needed to"

sir no!! Goten went super saiyan because one day his mother chichi was training him. she kept tell Goten to try harder and kept yelling at him. So Goten responed by needing to go super saiyan.

and no, Goku went super saiyan because he knew in his current state, he would lose to frieza. and so he needed to go super saiyan to avenge krillian.

I know what ur trying to get at, but to go super saiyan, its a need, not a desire.

Its not one or the other, its neither. its an overwhelming emotional state. You snap, hit a breaking point. and then it happens.

Otherwise Goku would have turned when he was fighting Raditz, needing to protect his son, or against Vegita on Earth. Or against Turles in the Tree of Might. Thats why Pan never turned super saiyan in GT, there were plenty of opportunities where she needed to on all those planets.
