Student commits suicide after secret webcast

A freshman at Rutgers University killed himself after his roommate allegedly posted on the Internet secretly taped footage of him having a sexual encounter in his dorm room, authorities and the victim's family said Wednesday.
Through an attorney, the family of Tyler Clementi issued a statement confirming that the 18-year-old had ended his life last week by jumping off the George Washington Bridge and said it is "cooperating fully with the ongoing criminal investigations."
Tyler Clementi is believed to have jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge.
Dharun Ravi, Mr. Clementi's roommate at Rutgers, and another student, Molly Wei, both 18 years old, are charged with invasion of privacy for using a webcam to transmit the secretly record footage on Sept. 19, Middlesex County officials said.
Mr. Ravi was charged with two additional counts of invasion of privacy for attempting to use the camera to view and transmit another encounter involving the same student two days later, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said in a statement.
Lawyers for Mr. Ravi and Ms. Wei did not return phone calls seeking comment and the two students did not respond to email messages sent on Wednesday. Ms. Wei was released on her own recognizance after she turned herself into Rutgers Police on Monday. Mr. Ravi was released on $25,000 bail on Tuesday after surrendering to police.
Both are charged with crimes that carry prison sentences of up to five years if they are convicted, prosecutors said. Under New Jersey law, it is a fourth-degree crime to collect or view images of someone nude or engaged in sexual contact without their consent, prosecutors said. It is a third-degree crime to distribute those images, prosecutors said.
On Sept. 22, a wallet containing Mr. Clementi's driver's license and Rutgers University identification card was found on the George Washington Bridge after two witnesses reporting seeing a young man jump from the span at about 9 p.m., a law-enforcement official with knowledge of the case said. No body has yet been recovered, the official said.
Officials with the Middlesex County prosecutor's office declined to comment on Mr. Clementi's death because he hasn't been publicly identified as the victim of the illegal taping at Rutgers University.
In its statement, Mr. Clementi's family described the graduate of Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, N.J., as "a fine young man and a distinguished musician." The statement, released by attorney Paul Mainardi, said the family "is heartbroken beyond words."
Mr. Clementi played the violin, the Associated Press reported. "He was a terrific musician, and a very promising, hardworking young man," Ed Schmiedecke, a former music director at Ridgewood High School, told the AP.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family right now," said the superintendent of the Ridgewood Public Schools, Dr. Daniel Fishbein, who sent out notices late last week informing students that Mr. Clementi was missing and offering grief counseling.
Mr. Ravi allegedly used the online program iChat to post the video on the Internet, and also broadcast a message about the posting on his Twitter feed, which has since been taken down.
Citing privacy concerns, a spokeswoman for Rutgers University would not comment on the cases involving Mr. Ravi and Ms. Wei, but said in a statement that the school "takes these matters seriously."
A New Jersey gay-rights group, Garden State Equality, said it considers Mr. Clementi's death a hate crime.
"We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of a young man who, by all accounts, was brilliant, talented and kind," the group's chairman, Steven Goldstein, said in a statement. "And we are sickened that anyone in our society, such as the students allegedly responsible for making the surreptitious video, might consider destroying others' lives as a sport."
They should get a lot of time in jail. Hopefully when this Dharun Ravi is in jail, he will drop the soap, and be violated.

seemed like a prank gone awry! I can see the humor of secretly filming a buddy gettin it on, incase he has some funny thing he does, or just weeps as he does the hanky panky, but then BOOM ITS ANOTHER GUY! And its all being streamed and too late to stop, both parties caught off guard.

i actually agree with him, killing yourself is stupid and is a crime
they say you end up working for eternity in the afterlife if you kill yourself
hopefully cleaning toilets, no matter what your life experiences are
you can always run away and try again, talk to new people, change your name, live on a beach, pan handle, etc, etc
i knew people who lived under a bridge and they were the most strong willed people i ever met
really gave me a different view on life, and i would never kill myself no matter how hard my life gets
it is sad that people do kill themselves, but it is the cowards way out, we were all given the gift of life why waste it

Yeah.. i honestly know a person who Killed Himself, and he didnt even have a reason close to the guy in the article.. its a really horrible thing to do, and "cody halterman" had over 1000 People he personally knew of friends and family and co workers that all attended his funeral, and wondered why.. Why did he take his life, what could have been so bad? Over 1000 people.. and over 3000 people conveying their condolances on his facebook page.. I dont know if i even would have 100 people if i died, no matter how i died.

I actually just meant that as far as stereotypes go. o.o I know a lot of intelligent people from NY, not to mention some of the most credible universities are located there and theres a lot of entrepreneurs with good heads on their shoulders.

dude i just told you somthing horrible that ive experienced, have you experienced someone who you knew for atleast 2 years that you thought was cool, had a life, was just beginning to live had as much going for him as any person could want, and everything seemed fine even to his closest friends and family then one day he leaves a mysterious note that sais some crazy things but still doesent do justice to any reason he would hang himself in his own bedroom, he worked the day prior to the night he did it, everyone who was around saw nothing unusual and he was laughing talking casual in break.. gave no clue... and no one could know to help him and somehow he could turn to no one for anything he needed? and He literatly had thousands of people Well known through school friends and family and work attend his funeral and 10's of thousands know Write and make dedicated pages of the sadness asking why sending condolences to his brother and everything.
to this day my fellow co workers somtimes write statuses on facebook related to cody, and One co worker told me Every time a girl stares at me it was because of cody, its a funny joke.. but in his own way he rooted for me to have a gf.. i cannot state enough, of anyone who killed them self this man had beyond no reason too.. and it left hundreds of people wondering Why? what on earth was he going through in the moment.. and why could we not help him? this was a 20 yr old man, just about to start his 2nd year of college had tons of friends, working as hard and good as anyone at rainbow, and liked talking to me about xbox games Daily... cody halterman left the Town of Cottage grove Minnesota Devestated...
