Is Reading Books frustrating for you
« on: October 07, 2010, 12:34:01 AM »
I find reading books to be frustrating.
I have no problem with reading articles over the internet, but when it comes to physical paper and reading. I am uber lazy.
Do you like reading? Do you like reading over the internet or on paper more?

I like reading over the internet better, but it's always good to pick up a book now and then.

Currently reading "The Art of War by Sun Tzu"

I actually cannot stand reading anything on the computer if i can get a paper copy of it o.o books and stuff, i wont read online... for english i just printed out a 12 page speech because i have to read it and refuse to read it online; i especially do this for school stuff because i highlight key facts and write in the margins a lot

I think it would be easier to read a novel from a iPad or iBook.  If it is other than a novel than it would probably be best on paper.

I always get lost in the words and loose my place when reading a book because I fidget a lot, and can't keep focus very long.  With an iPad I can adjust the font size and the pages wont flop back down if I fumble it a little bit.

Always have read books, always will. Currently going thru some novels in my collection to re-charge my reading motor. I have 100+ books in my collection, all of which I've read atleast twice.

IM A HEAVY READER

As for the screen vs paper reading, screens will make you go blind faster, as you're basically staring at a lightbulb. I enjoy the arcane feeling of holding the physical thing, not to mention cover art, old coupons, and other titles that the publisher has put out. You know, those pages no one pays attention to at the end of books.

Also, you can get books used, which you cant with virtual books. I know Macs will want to charge $1.00 or more for an ebook, which you can pick one up for cheaper at a used book store or FREE at a library.

Another issue is the library thats available for ebooks, sure they'll have hundreds of thousands, but that pales in comparison with how many physical books you can't get ebooks for.

There is a big difference between staring at a 100 watt light-bulb and something that has been designed to make it comfortable for reading.  Reading books can make u go blind faster if you are straining your eyes or reading in a dim lit room.

The problem with these concepts is the application. If you're reading in the dark, why? Just flick on a light and you're all good. Theres no reason to read in the dark, other than laziness.

Books don't generate light, computer screens do. One can turn on lights while reading a book, but one can't turn off the screen when reading on a monitor. With one you can adjust for proper viewing, while with the other you can't.

Finally, the saying of reading makes you go blind is a myth, not to mention one of the most believed myths thats come around over the years. Mostly because eye damage and eye strain are two different things.

Heres some info:

Niccolo Machiavelli's "The Prince" is another good read, up your alley if you enjoyed Art of War.
