A Hazleton man stopped for speeding Beaver Meadows on Saturday stands accused of carrying six pounds of marijuana and $1,000.
Peter J. Huff, 20, of 133 E. E. Diamond Ave., is charged with manufacture of a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and exceeding maximum speed limits.
According to an affidavit of probable cause filed with District Judge Edward Lewis of Jim Thorpe by Weatherly Police Chief Mike Morresi, here's what happened: At about 1:16 a.m., he was monitoring traffic on Broad Street and saw a vehicle traveling north at 46 mph in a 35 mph zone, above the posted speed limit.
Morresi pulled the car over at Berwick and Rose streets.
When he asked the driver for his license, registration and proof of insurance, Morresi noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. Huff handed him the information, but Morresi noted the man appeared to be very nervous. The owner of the car, Jeremy Lescowitch, 19, was identified as a passenger. Morresi asked Lescowitch if he could search the car, and Lescowitch said yes.
Morresi found the marijuana and cash. Huff said all the marijuana and money belonged to him, and that Lescowitch had nothing to do with it. Morresi took Huff to the police station and read him his Miranda rights. Huff agreed to talk to Morresi and give him a written statement.
Huff was arraigned before Lewis and jailed under $50,000 cash bail.
