The old-school gamers at Nerdballoon sat down with a slightly uncommunicative 11-year-old and asked him to describe his first experience ever with a platform shooter - the beloved Contra. Predictably, he hated it.
The graphics "suck," the music is "boring" and - I'm not sure if this is a positive or a negative - "it's not as easy as Halo 3 or Call of Duty: World at War," rating it "9 out of 10" on the difficulty-o-meter.
He also doesn't like the fact everything's a one-shot kill. What would he rather play than Contra? Why, Call of Duty and Halo, of course. I'm getting the idea that's all he does play. Well that, and hockey.
Huh, I actually found this fun when I played it.

Yeah the problem stems from he was a Kid who has seen better, Technology and what kids get accustomed to Does not work backwords usualy,
Like if he was a kid who hadnt played Halo or Xbox 360 or even xbox games then maybe he would of delt with the games simplicity flaws grown and maybe even known to lookup codes and then figure out how to beat the game.
but hes seen better gets turned off by not looking at the game from its era but comparing it directly to modern world and then also expects a nintendo game to have similar play or learnability from somthing written by microsoft and has no desire to even attempt to work with the game learn how nintendo games usualy are beatable or anything he probably didnt even give a though to the game having a 24 lives code or anything. gave up and didnt care probably 2 min into play or less.

Still it annoys me how he's not looking at this with an open mind, KNOWING its an older game instead of comparing it to games like Halo 3 and Call of Duty.

ok, hears what i think. me and my dad used to play contra way back in the day. it was fun. now i play halo3, and l4d, and ff11, and other such games. i found out you can download contra off of xboxlive, and thought "oh hell ya". so i did. played the game for about 30 minutes, and finally realized...the game isnt really all that great. its fun for short periods of time, but any longer than that, and the game gets tiring. the only reason why most of us here thought it was one of the best games, is because there was nothing better at the time. i grew up with contra, but now that im playing newer games, i cant really go back. i personally, do not blame this 11 year old, and most certainly would NOT smack him, neuter him, or put him to sleep

I never said anything about maiming that child--when I plug in the Nintendo (i'm 16, mind you) and put on Contra, I absolutely love the game every time I play. It never really seems repetitive since it's always a challenge for my and I use the Konami Code sometimes. No matter how many times I play it, I still love it--kinda like the NES Ninja Gaiden!

yeah and Omatsu States Exactly how unless you were around in the era and Knew exactly what it was like back in the day you cannot go backwords in technology and aprecieate it at all, and it seems to work in all forms of technology like with kids and the original sony Tape walkman. but still sometimes with how Hatefull kids can be and stuff they can have such disrespect if they feel somthing was garbage that it Can greatly hurt those like us who tresure old stuff.

Also Wesker... Dead Kennedy's, awesome band!!! 70s-80s and some of the 90s was the best shit out there music wise (Of those years, 80s being the best)

Like its died a Worthy Death but my grandma owned a coleco Vision and had 40 games!
I played it from when i was 3 up untill about age 20! my grandpa was a electricion so he actually modifeyd the controllers and had wooden boards attached so it was even more playable
but they had all the great Games, Qbert, Mouse trap, donkey kong, DK Jr, Zaxxon, Pepper 2, venture, Bump and jump, omega race, we had 3 Smurfs games Smurfs adventure, Smurfs paint, and Smurf animation. So many others too its hard to recall it all great memories!
i had so many video games in my life, ive played video games since i was about 2 years old...
it all started with my dads Commedore 64 and my grandmas colleco vision.. then at age 5 i got a Nintendo For Cristmas!

Yeah, we had a whole coleco game collection case filled, we ran outta space for them all =P My mom bought it for us, when we were younger, and I'm the only one still willing to play those old games, because I love them. -.- I think I may have been born in the wrong generation =P I don't like current music, current fads, current news topics, current video games... =] Retro stuff is so much better! [heart]
I love going all out on retro day at my school =P Well that and mix-match day, which is really more like crack head cross-dresser Tuesday, because it's always on a Tuesday, and the boys come to school in bras and skirts xD Its awesome. You can dress like a complete idiot and no one cares =P I wear boxers over my pants and two completely different socks and shoes and I look like a total moron, but it's fun. Retro day, I like to go with the classic 80s look, flaired pants, long bright colored shirts, head bands, thick make up, and big hair =P It's fun.
Nothing beats the systems of the past though, if you play Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog was amazing! Awesome game; played it for hours. Loved the music, especially to the bonus levels!

I recently got the Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection for Xbox 360, with all of the Sonic games (w00t!), plus Vectorman 1 & 2 (double w00t!), Shinobi (woot!!) and plenty of other classics. I played Sonic 2 for strictly 5 days, trying to beat that final level. I guess that's why I almost failed Biology...

I lost interest in the series when Sonic Heroes came out. Then I got back into the classic ones. I used to have the first 2 on Sega Genesis until they vanished at my Uncle's House.
I also used to have Mighty Max and Doom for Genesis.

As for the sandbox games, my brother bought the GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, Gun, True Crime 1 and 2, and JAWS: Unleashed. It was horrendous--every day I would just sit there and he would be going around New York or wherever just driving and shooting, driving and shooting. [usuck]
